About the museum
Tommarps Ullspinneri (wool spinning mill) was founded in 1868 by Anders Andersson and was run for five generations within the same family. The son Herman Andersson took over the business in 1919, and from 1954 the mill was run by Hilding Hernedahl until his death in 1989. Production ceased with the third generation.
Since then the fourth and fifth generations have preserved and partly restored the facility. The mill is today run mainly as a museum by the Hernedahl family. It lies by the Tommarpsån river, and the large garden beside the river, with a waterfall, is part of the visit.
The museum has a complete machine park from the 1860s, with German and British spinning machines in cast iron and belt-driven. The machines are driven by a hot-bulb engine, and there is also a water turbine that is not in operation today. The family has learned to tease (plysa) and card wool and has knowledge of the operation and maintenance of the historic machines, but not all of the machines are in operation today.
