About the museum
Punschmuseet at Vinkelgatan 7 in Karlshamn is Sweden's only museum about punch. In the museum's storage, J.N. von Bergen's punch factory has been rebuilt in an authentic setting with working machines and a complete inventory. The factory was re-erected at Karlshamns museum in 1976.
Punch has been called Sweden's national drink. In the late 19th century the Swedes drank the most, about six million litres a year, from a population of 4.5 million. As early as the 1850s there were two factories in Karlshamn making punch, J.N. von Bergen & Son and C.G. Berg. The latter was bought by the spirits king L.O. Smith, who in 1885 registered the trademark Carlshamns Flaggpunsch with two crossed Swedish flags.
Von Bergen was granted citizenship (burskap) in Carlshamn in 1815. He ran a tobacco factory, trade in fish, a salting and smoking business, a shipping company and wine imports, and from 1822 he began manufacturing playing cards. His punch production continued even after the introduction of the state spirits monopoly, then with low-alcohol essences that were sold, among other places, to the USA during Prohibition. The museum holds preserved apparatus, bottles, wooden casks, fittings, trade books and prize medals. Punschmuseet shares its entrance with Karlshamns konsthall on Vinkelgatan and belongs to Karlshamns museum's cultural quarter.
