About the museum
Råå museum för fiske och sjöfart is owned and run by Råå museiförening, a non-profit association. The association was founded in 1936, but as early as 1933 some fishermen and skippers had begun collecting objects for a fisheries and maritime museum. The museum opened in 1937 with the task of telling the history of fishermen and seafarers.
The museum moved to its present premises by the harbour in 1980. After extensions in 1997 and 2004 the exhibition area is about 750 square metres, and the large exhibition hall Läget was renovated in winter 2005–2006. Around 1900 Råå was Sweden's largest fishing village and a significant seafaring town, with at most 51 registered sailing vessels.
The permanent exhibition lets the visitor walk through a living environment: Fiskaregatan with fishing gear and nets, fishermen's homes with kitchen and cottage, a large ship-model room, navigation instruments, a captain's cabin, a ship's chandlery and craft workshops. In the boat hall stands, among others, Golden Lady, the sailing boat of the solo sailor Kurt Björklund, and the engine hall contains old hot-bulb and diesel engines as well as a boat simulator.
