About the museum
Reijmyre Glasbruk (Reijmyre Glassworks) was founded in 1810 by Johan Jacob Graver and Baron Mattias Alexander von Ungern-Sternberg. The site was chosen because the forests of Kolmården supplied firewood for the furnaces. In the 1830s blown glass and pressed glass were introduced, and in 1895 the works was connected to the railway by a 14.5 km long cableway. Around the turn of the century Reijmyre was Sweden’s largest glassworks.
At the beginning of the 1900s the works reached an international audience with Art Nouveau glass, and in 1902 overlay glass broke through at the exhibition in Turin. Betzy Ählström, Sweden’s first female glass designer, was among the pioneers, and Monica Bratt, who worked there from 1937 to 1958, is the works’ most beloved designer. Later Paul Kedelv, Björn Trägårdh, Tyko Axelsson and Margareta Hennix, among others, worked for the works, and today Thomas Sandell, Jonas Bohlin, Ann Wåhlström and Richard Juhlin do.
The museum tells the stories of the people, designers and glass that have shaped Reijmyre. The glassworks is still in operation with a working glass furnace (hytta), and visitors can follow the glassblowing, take a guided tour or try glassblowing themselves.
