About the museum
Magnehults skogsbruksmuseum (Magnehult Forestry Museum) is a small museum that wants to teach young people how forestry used to be, with emphasis on the production of charcoal. Every year in May a kolmila (charcoal stack) is built and lit, and a tar kiln is prepared. The Kolets och tjärans dag (Day of Charcoal and Tar) has for many years been a public event at the museum.
In 2014 the local newspaper reported that some thirty men had been building the two-metre-high charcoal stack since early March. It was covered with turf and soil so that air could only enter through channels at the base. The site also has a charcoal burner's hut (kolarkoja), and on occasion a quiz walk (tipspromenad). The museum lies next to Magnehults naturreservat (nature reserve), which has a circular trail of about two kilometres and a shelter.
