About the museum
Rothoffs museikoloni lies in the allotment area that stretches across the ramparts around Landskrona citadel and is counted as one of Sweden's oldest surviving ones. The area has been cultivated since the 18th century, when the citadel lost its strategic role and local officers were given allotment plots. In the 1860s the apothecary Elis Bergh began growing medicinal plants here, and soon more plots were leased and small wooden huts were built. In 1963 the state, which owns the land, planned to demolish the allotment area, but its cultural-historical value was recognised and some plots were preserved.
The Rothoff family bought a plot by the citadel at the beginning of the 20th century because they needed a place to grow potatoes. The cottage was built in 1903 and is one of the oldest preserved in the area. Originally it was just a single room measuring 2 by 2.5 metres. The plot has been preserved and today works as a window onto the past.
The cottage is furnished as it looked in the early 20th century and holds a small exhibition on the history of the allotment area and the Rothoff family. The museum is run by Landskrona museum. In the garden, organic cultivation is practised, and the head gardener offers different themes and crops each year. Rothoffs lott is a beautiful, peaceful place where visitors can sit in the garden and look into the cottage.
