About the museum
The Tycho Brahe Museum is located in the middle of the island of Ven in the Öresund, where the Danish nobleman Tycho Brahe built one of Europe’s first scientific research centres in the late 1500s, with the castle Uraniborg and the underground observatory Stjärneborg. The king gave him the island and income from several estates in return for building his observatory and leading a scientific programme. In 1597 he was forced to leave Denmark and later became imperial court astronomer in Prague.
The museum is on the spot where Tycho studied the starry sky and was inaugurated in 2005. It is housed in Sankt Ibbs nya kyrka (St Ibb’s New Church), also called Allhelgonakyrkan (All Saints’ Church), a neo-Gothic brick church built in 1898–1899 right next to the remains of Uraniborg and Stjärneborg. The church was deconsecrated in 2003 and is owned by the Statens fastighetsverk (Swedish National Property Board), and the museum is run by the City of Landskrona.
The exhibitions tell of Tycho’s life and science, of court life at Uraniborg and of how the people on the island lived in the 1500s. Outside the museum there is a historic playground, a planet trail, a partly reconstructed Renaissance garden and the underground observatory Stjärneborg with a short sound and light show.
