About the museum

The Sågverksmuseet (Sawmill Museum) in Vansbro opened in spring 1981 through a collaboration between Dalarnas museum (Dalarna Museum), Vansbro Municipality and Vansbro Local Heritage Society. The museum is in the library premises of the Medborgarhuset (community house) and depicts the sawmill era of Vansbro, which quickly became a sawmill district after the railway arrived in the 1890s. The Dalasågen (Dala Sawmill), which opened in 1892, was then Sweden's largest sawmill, and the Brosågen (Bro Sawmill) followed in 1893.

The museum's centrepiece is an authentic sawmill worker's home, where most of the fixed fittings come from Ljungbergsbacken by the Dalasågen. The home shows how the workers lived in the first decades of the 1900s. The museum also contains photographs and objects from the sawmill era, as well as pictures from the log-floating era.

A water leak in January 2016 damaged the premises, and the collections were packed away for several years. The premises were renovated, and the local heritage society's sawmill museum was reopened in autumn 2021.
