About the museum
Gotlands Spinneri (Gotland Spinning Mill) lies in Fardhem in southern Gotland and is run by Driftföreningen Gotlands Spinneri (Gotlands Spinneri Operating Association), an economic association. Carded yarns and carded wool batts are made and sold here. The wool comes only from sheep grazing on Gotland, mainly Gotland sheep (gotlandsfår) and Leicester sheep (leicesterfår), and is collected directly after shearing from a few selected farms. The wool is sorted by hand and washed carefully before being processed in the machines into yarn or carded wool. Yarns and wool are also dyed at the mill.
Most of the machine park runs on old-fashioned mechanics, gears and belts, and at times it can be noisy when the machines are running. Among them are carding machines made in East Germany in the 1920s and a Swiss-made Reiter spinning machine from 1942.
Visitors are welcome to come in and see how the yarn is made. The products are sold in the mill's shop and in the online shop, and study visits can be arranged by agreement.
