About the museum
The Sagomuseet in Ljungby highlights stories that have been told for hundreds, and even thousands, of years. The stories have lived on because they were entertaining and made listeners laugh, shiver or cry. The museum draws on the rich store of fairy tales and legends told in Sagobygden (the Tale Country), the part of south-western Småland that comprises the municipalities of Ljungby, Alvesta and Älmhult, and where much of the Swedish oral tradition was written down.
Since oral stories rest on the meeting between teller and listener, the museum has been created with a magical atmosphere and great beauty. Visitors can walk around on their own or follow a storytelling guide who brings the stories to life, and each guide tells in their own way. Like the tale itself, the museum aims to awaken wonder and curiosity rather than to explain the history of oral storytelling.
The museum came about through the work of many people, with ideas and design by, among others, the textile artist Mia Einarsdotter, the storyteller Per Gustavsson and the wood sculptor Kjell Sundberg. The operation also includes Lilla Galleriet, a museum shop, a storytelling garden with tree books that can be listened to on your mobile, a reference library and Eskilsgården. Sagobygden also runs legend sites in the landscape, where 43 legend cabinets tell of the places the legends are linked to.
