About the museum

Saxemara båtvarv (Saxemara Boatyard) lies in Saxemaraviken, about five kilometres south of Ronneby, and has been on the site since 1927. The yard was founded as early as 1917, then on Stickelön at the western edge of Ronneby Municipality. In the past the Blekinge coast was full of similar yards, and Saxemara is the only one still in operation. It built high-quality wooden boats and delivered, among others, to the navy, the customs service and the Lotsverket (Swedish Maritime Pilot Service).

The cultural environment around the yard is undamaged. According to Wikipedia, the yard was bought in 2007 by Blekinge museum, which held exhibitions during the summer half-year, and from 2014 the facility was leased to an operator who continued to build traditional wooden boats, preferably Blekinge models. According to Ronneby Municipality, the yard is today owned by Saxemara samhällsförening (Saxemara Community Association). During the archaeological investigations of the ship Gribshunden in 2019, the yard served as the base for the work.

Ronneby Municipality has a detailed development plan (detaljplan) that came into legal force in 2024. It protects the cultural environment while allowing the yard to continue as a boatyard and to be used for cultural purposes.
