About the museum
The association Skärgårdsmuseet was formed in 1969 as a non-profit association. The museum’s first object was an old kitchen cupboard that was auctioned the same year. In the first years the association arranged travelling exhibitions on Djurö, Runmarö, Stavsnäs and Nämdö, and the first permanent exhibition opened in 1973 in the teacher’s residence by Stavsnäs school.
The following year the association bought the former Byrström shop by Stavsnäs summer harbour, a general store with roots going back to 1877, and the main museum was inaugurated in 1974. The house was rebuilt and extended in 1997–98, and the funds were largely collected among the members.
Today the museum has permanent exhibitions, special exhibitions that change every year and a museum shop. For the 2026 season the Båthallen (Boat Hall) has been expanded with three permanent exhibitions: Djurhamn, En skärgårdsskuta kommer lastad (An archipelago vessel comes in laden) and Skärgårdens olika båtar (The Archipelago’s Various Boats). A large part of the permanent exhibition has been given sound, with 16 signposted sound stations reached by QR code. The museum also has a reference library with archipelago books, periodicals and newspaper cuttings. The association also runs branches on Nämdö and Runmarö, and the work is carried by volunteer members and museum hosts.
