About the museum

Thorslundkagge is a cooperage in Högsjö in Södermanland. The company was founded by master cooper Johan Thorslund, who in 1997 became the first Swede in fifty years to receive a master's certificate (mästarbrev) in the trade. Here barrels for drinks and garden barrels are made of Swedish oak, a process that takes more than three years from oak log to finished barrel.

Ekliggarnas sal (the Oak Cask Hall) houses a collection of historic oak casks (ekliggare), large barrels used to store punch and cognac. They belonged to the wine trading firm Cederlund, known for the punch brand Caloric, and stood in cellars beneath Stockholm Palace in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Most of the casks were built in Germany and decorated by the sculptor Henrik Nerpin and his son Thor August Nerpin.

The casks were moved to Högsjö in the 2000s in cooperation with Spritmuseum, which has deposited part of the collection, and the hall was inaugurated in August 2013. Today fourteen oak casks are shown: six belong to the Kungaserien (King series), six to the Bellmanserien (Bellman series), and two are cognac casks. The hall can be seen on booked visits, often together with a guided tour of the cooperage.
