About the museum
Oxelösunds järnvägsmuseum is run by Föreningen Sörmlands Veteranjärnväg (Sörmland Veteran Railway Association), FSVJ, which was formed on 6 April 2010 after its first members had gathered as early as 2008. The association wanted to give Oxelösund a railway-history museum with settings, vehicles and exhibitions, and since 2013 it has run veteran train services. The museum opened to the public on 5 June 2022.
The museum is located at the Oxelösund engine shed, which was built in 1920–1938 and which the association looks after and preserves. The story takes as its starting point the importance of the railway for Oxelösund’s development from a small fishing community into an industrial town, from the construction of the line in 1877 to the strong expansion of the 1950s and 1960s with electrification, harbour and ironworks.
In the exhibition hall in the red track-keeper’s cottage, the history of the railway to Oxelösund is told, together with what the Gränges group (Grängeskoncernen) did for the town’s growth. On the site there is an engine shed with a locomotive exhibition and workshop, a goods warehouse, a goods wagon, a vehicle hall and an outdoor exhibition of historic railway vehicles, most built around the 1950s. The museum is a living one: restoration and maintenance take place during opening hours.
