About the museum
Stavsjö ironworks was founded in 1666, and the museum tells the story of the works from the 1600s to the present day. During the first two centuries, from the mid-1600s to the mid-1800s, mainly war materiel such as cannons, mortars and shot was produced, and in the 1700s the works was one of the country's leading cannon foundries. Cannon production ceased in 1859, after which steam boilers, threshing machines and machine tools were made. Today shut-off valves for the pulp and paper industry are manufactured. The Russians burned the works in 1719, and the manor house burned in 1915.
The museum lies in the works' old power station, which operated from 1914 to 1955. A 14-metre waterfall once drove water wheels for the blowing bellows at the blast furnace and for a grain mill, and from 1916 the power station supplied the workshops with electricity. The building has previously also served as a sawmill and grain mill. Next to it lies Ryssköket (the Russian Kitchen), the only building that survived the fire of 1719 and which is now privately owned.
The museum works to bring back original cannons from Stavsjö that have been scattered around the world. In 2003 it received several cannons from the Army Museum (Armémuseum), the Navy Museum (Marinmuseum) and Norrköping municipality. The museum is a member of the working-life museums network ArbetSam.
