About the museum
Björndammens masugn (blast furnace) is an old blast furnace in the forest outside Malmköping in Flen municipality. The first blast furnace was built by Gerhard de Besche around 1650, and the ore came, among other places, from the mines at Starrsäter. The iron was further refined at Stålboga works, where bar iron, nails, gun carriages and sheet metal were made in the 1600s, and in the 1700s cannon barrels were cast at Björndammen.
Operations were at times interrupted due to a lack of charcoal. A rolling mill for bar iron was established in 1868; the works ceased in 1877, and the blast furnace finally fell silent in 1883. About ten buildings remain, including the smithy and Björndammens gård from 1723, and many walls are built of slag stone. The environment is counted among the best-preserved industrial history environments in Sörmland.
The association Björndammens masugn was formed in 2013 to preserve the blast furnace and make it accessible. The building was given a new roof, new drainage and new facades, and the blast furnace was inaugurated after the renovation on 21 May 2016. Today it is used as a cultural stage with concerts, theatre and other events, and the association receives groups for guided visits by arrangement.
