About the museum

Museet Malmahed is located in Malmköping, in an old barracks (logement) from the 1870s where soldiers of Södermanlands regemente (Södermanland Regiment) once slept. Malma hed (Malma Heath) was the regiment’s training ground from 1774 to 1921, and during that time Malmköping grew from a church village into a town with traders, craftsmen and many inns. At its peak more than two thousand men gathered on the heath at the same time.

When the regiment left the heath in 1921, a new era followed with Södermanlands gymnastikförbund (Södermanland Gymnastics Association). Children from all over Sörmland came every summer to gymnastics camps, slept in the soldiers’ old barracks, trained on the heath and bathed in Hosjön, and the country’s best gymnasts trained here before the Olympic Games.

The museum has a model of the town, photographs, film and sound about soldiers and gymnasts, and a register of all indelta (allotted) soldiers in Sörmland from 1682 to 1901, which visitors may use freely. The building also houses Gröna rummet (the Green Room), where Naturskyddsföreningen i Flen and Arkeologi i Sörmland show an exhibition on the development and condition of Sörmland’s nature. Sörmlands museum is the principal.
