About the museum
The workshop in Stora Mellby was founded by the village's mechanic Karl Aron Larsson (1886–1951) and was run between 1916 and 1994. At first, various repair jobs were carried out and threshing machines were built, but from the 1920s increasingly agricultural implements, hot-bulb engines and vices. Towards the end, sheet-metal working tools and tools for bending reinforcing bars were made. Drawings and casting moulds based on the founder's own patents have largely been preserved.
Bjärke hembygdsförening (local heritage society) took over the workshop in 1994 and has since developed it into a living industrial heritage museum. The workshop was built around 1916 and has retained a working machinery park from the 1920s, where a single motor drives most of the machines via belts and shafts in the ceiling. The exhibition building was built in 1901–1902 as a storehouse for reloading goods onto the railway and is today used as an exhibition space. In 2011 a machine hall was added for renovated objects connected with the area.
The association's ambition is to preserve the working workshop environment, show it through guided viewings and document the area's industrial development.
