About the museum
The idea for Handens museum och smedja (Handen Museum and Smithy) was born around 1998–1999 with the art blacksmith Martin Ahlsén and the teacher and local historian Olle Flodby, as a separate section within Haninge hembygdsgille (Haninge heritage guild). The museum began as a project to save the croft Svensro, which was threatened with demolition. It was originally a day-labourer's croft (dagsverkstorp) that stood in another place in Österhaninge parish.
The croft was dismantled in 2001 and rebuilt at Getporsvägen 8 in Handen, where it was given a turf roof. The museum was inaugurated on 6 December 2008, and the smithy, which had already existed on the site, became part of the activities. In 2018 Handens museum och smedja became an association of its own.
The museum tells the story of Handen's development and of the neighbouring areas Vendelsö, Brandbergen and Kolatorp through objects, pictures and stories. In the active smithy, traditional forging is demonstrated, and courses and workshops are held. Next door there is a shop with handmade forged products. Markets are held during the year, including a spring market, an autumn market with a medieval and Viking theme, and a Christmas market.
