About the museum
Ingvastebo såg och kvarn (Ingvastebo sawmill and mill) lies about 2.5 kilometres south of Haraldsbo in Nykil parish in Linköping Municipality. The sawmill was already on the site and is marked on the 1870 district map (häradskarta); it was then a simple frame saw, and remains of it are still in the sawhouse. The mill came to Ingvastebo around 1890, after having previously stood at several other sites. Operations ceased in 1956.
After the closure the site fell into disrepair. In 1971 a comprehensive renovation was carried out with the participation of Linköping Municipality, the county museum, Domänverket (the Swedish National Forest Board) and Nykils hembygdsförening (Nykil local heritage association), but when the renovated water wheel was to be run during a demonstration it broke down and the work stopped. In 1999 the work was resumed by a private individual, who received help from local residents. Roofs, walls and floors were partly replaced, and an exact copy of the old water wheel was made. After nine years of work, the mill and the sawmill can again be seen in operation.
Today the site is a working-life museum. The area is private but is kept open to the public. There is a smithy, where production started again after 60 years, a shoemaker's cottage, a mill café and a walking trail around the pond. The mill or the sawmill is shown in operation when the water supply allows.
