About the museum

Öna lies in Nykil parish and is first mentioned in a letter from 1537 as common land (utmark) under Dockebo. The first known resident, the crofter Erik Bengtsson, died there in 1699. At the end of the 1700s there were two small farms and a backstuga (small cottage), and after new clearances there were four units. The residents supplemented their income with, among other things, a shoe factory, ribbon weaving and wood-splint cutting (spånhuggning). In 1928 the arable land, meadows and forest were divided between the farms.

The nurse My Lindström and the music teacher Ella Sundqvist lived in Öna from 1943 to 1973. Verner “Mosen” Ahnberg, the last permanent resident, died in 1971. In 1973 Uppgården and Nergården were donated to Östergötlands museum, which today owns three of the properties. The shoemaker's croft (Bäckströmsgården) is privately owned.

Since 2002 Öna has been a cultural reserve managed by the County Administrative Board. It gives an impression of how people lived in a poor forest district up to the early 1900s.
