About the museum
The Carriage History Museum (Vagnshistoriska museet) in Komlösa by Fristad shows a collection of carriages and sleighs described as probably the largest in Sweden. The collection ranges from the simple ox-drawn cart and the peasant’s trilla (a light two-wheeled cart) to the fine carriages of kings and nobles. There are also sleighs and about eighty harnesses and saddles of various kinds from the 1500s onwards.
Among the individual vehicles the museum mentions Gustaf V’s carriage, Count Hamilton’s coupé, Florence Stephen’s calash (kalesch) with a foderfördäck and original harnesses from 1891, the Grand Hotel’s exclusive Victoria carriage and Countess Sparre’s five-glass carriage. The museum is run by a non-profit association, which is also responsible for the Bränntorvsmuseet (Burnt Peat Museum) in the same area, and visitors have access to that museum as well.
The museum and Komlösa cultural centre lie at Backa, and the museum receives visitors by booking by telephone. The association also arranges guided tours for companies and organisations.
