About the museum
Yxnanäs hembygdsförening (Yxnanäs Local Heritage Association) was formed in 1921 as one of the first in Kronoberg County, with the aim of creating a museum for the district around Yxnanäs in Älmeboda parish. The first item acquired was an abandoned cottage from the 18th century in Flishult, which was dismantled, moved to Yxnanäs by horse and cart, and rebuilt.
In 1972 the association bought the old school with the associated plot, and the collections are now shown there. The schoolroom is used as a meeting room and has kept its original character, while the other rooms and the attic hold, among other things, the complete interior of a village shop and a collection of records. The collections comprise objects from the Stone Age, the craft era and the school’s history.
The association also owns the company sawmill (bolagssåg), which was equipped in the 1920s and driven by a steam engine. The sawmill was donated to the association in 1975, and the steam boiler and steam engine remain. There is also a former fire station on the site.
