About the museum
The Chesa Planta is one of the largest manor houses in the Engadine, and its park-like garden shapes the Plazzet in the center of Samedan. The northern part dates from the late 16th century; the southern part was added in the 18th century. For more than 200 years the house belonged to the von Salis family, who had the late-Baroque living rooms and corridors in which the museum is now located fitted out between 1775 and 1780.
In 1817 the property passed by marriage to the von Planta family, who lived here year-round until around 1900. At the request of four female descendants, the house with its contents was transferred in 1943 to the public-law foundation Fundaziun de Planta and opened to the public in 1946. The foundation's purpose is to operate a public Romansh library and to foster the Romansh language and culture.
The residential museum shows noble life in the Engadine over several centuries and reflects the lifestyle of the European nobility. As far as is known, the furniture and objects on display were used by the residents themselves. Since the 1980s, cultural events and special exhibitions have complemented the program; in summer, Romansh courses are also held. Today the Chesa Planta sees itself as a center of expertise for Romansh language and culture in the Upper Engadine.
