About the museum
Casa de la Vall was built at the end of the 16th century as the manor house of the Busquets family, on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Valira valley. A century later the owners sold it to the General Council, which in 1702 made it its seat and the country’s court of justice.
Until 2011 it hosted the sessions of the Andorran parliament. The most important renovations were carried out in 1962, and several features of the building date from that time. The attic served as a dormitory for councillors who stayed overnight after long sessions, and between 1987 and 1991 the Andorran Postal Museum was housed here. In 2011 the General Council moved to a new building right next door, but official ceremonies are still held in the house.
Today visitors can see the interior: the criminal courtroom, the Sala dels Passos Perduts (Hall of Lost Steps) with 16th-century mural paintings, the council chamber, the kitchens and the Armari de les set claus (Cabinet of the Seven Keys), where valuable historical documents are kept. Outside, the square with the dovecote, the façades of lime mortar and sandstone, the slate roof and the coat of arms of the Busquets family and the Principality complete the visit.
