About the museum
During 1995 and 1996 archaeological excavations at the site of the Plečašova štala (Plečaš Barn) in Vid yielded a sensational find: the remains of the Roman temple of the Augusteum and 17 marble sculptures of natural and larger-than-life size. The find prompted the idea of a joint presentation of the site, the architectural remains and numerous other archaeological material.
The foundation stone of the future museum was laid on 19 July 2004. The Arheološki muzej Narona (Archaeological Museum Narona) was founded by decree of the Government of the Republic of Croatia in 2005, and after very complex construction work it was solemnly opened on 18 May 2007 as the first museum in Croatia built in situ. This way of presenting an archaeological site has few parallels in Europe and the world.
The museum has received awards: the architect Goran Rako received the “Vladimir Nazor” award for the project, and the museum received the “Plavi cvijet” (Blue Flower) award of the Croatian Tourist Board. It actively takes part in the Noć muzeja (Museum Night) and the International Museum Day, and in summer it organises the “Naronitansko kulturno ljeto” (Narona Cultural Summer) on the outdoor terraces, with theatre performances, exhibitions, concerts and book presentations.
