About the museum
The foundation of today’s museum is the Ornithological Collection, the legacy of the ornithologist Dragutin Rucner. In autumn 1947 Rucner first came to the Neretva valley and met members of the Metković Hunting Association. Out of a shared love of birds, the idea arose of a collection that would show the public the wealth of the bird world of the lower course of the river. The hunting association provided funds for researching the avifauna, and in return specimens were prepared for the collection. The research lasted through all seasons from 1948 to 1953, and the Ornithological Collection opened to the public in 1952 in the premises of the hunting association with 240 bird specimens.
The present permanent exhibition, designed by museologist Dr Nikola Tvrtković and realised by staff of the Hrvatski prirodoslovni muzej (Croatian Natural History Museum) in Zagreb, shows the nature of the Neretva valley using panels, three-dimensional habitat dioramas, stuffed animals and multimedia. It is arranged in five rooms in a circular layout.
The first room is devoted to the geological and biospeleological features of the delta, including a 3D model of a cave. Rooms two to four present dioramas of aquatic and terrestrial habitats, bird migration, and the sounds of birds and amphibians. The fifth room tells the story of biodiversity protection and bird ringing. The exit from the third room leads into the museum garden, with bird boxes and an insect hotel.
