About the museum
The Stonske zidine (Walls of Ston) consist of a main wall with three fortresses (Veliki Kaštio, Koruna and Podzvizd), 41 towers, seven bastions, four outer walls and a moat around Ston. Originally about 7,000 m long, they comprise the walls of Ston, the walls of Mali Ston and the Great Wall. The Republic of Ragusa began building them in 1333 because of constant threats from the edges of the Pelješac peninsula; the Great Wall (1,200 m) at Pozvizd was built in 18 months and cost 12,000 ducats. Construction and extension lasted almost four centuries, and they were last used in defence in the 19th century. Ston was built according to a plan from 1335, supplemented in 1370, and is considered one of the best-planned towns in Europe. The walls are managed by the Društvo prijatelja dubrovačke starine (Society of Friends of Dubrovnik Antiquities).
