Gradski muzej Korčula

City museum in the Renaissance Gabrielis Palace on St Mark’s Square, with displays on the cultural and economic past of the town and island of Korčula.

Opening hoursAdmission €8

About the museum

The Gradski muzej Korčula is housed in the Gabrielis Palace on St Mark’s Square in the centre of Korčula town. The restoration of the palace made possible a contemporary presentation of the museum collections and of the building’s architectural development; the palace is a cultural good of the Republic of Croatia. The new permanent display has improved the presentation of the town’s and island’s material and intangible heritage.

The archaeological and natural history collection is in the basement, a former cistern, where the living rock is presented as the seabed with underwater archaeological finds. The natural history collection consists of fossils of plants and fish from the Cretaceous and the jaw of a rhinoceros from the Pleistocene. The archaeological collection covers finds from prehistory to late antiquity and early Christianity, among them flint knives and pottery from Badija and Vela Spila, and Greek vessels from graves in Lumbarda.

In the north exhibition hall on the ground floor there is a copy of the Lumbarda psephism (ancient Greek decree) with photographs of newly found fragments, and stone inscriptions from antiquity to the 18th century and Korčula coats of arms bear witness to historical events. On the staircase there is a chronological presentation of events important for the town and island from the 4th century BC to the end of the 20th century.
