About the museum
The Interpretacijski Marko Polo centar is designed as a place where visitors can get to know the life of Marko Polo, the historical circumstances and way of thinking that led to his travels, and the journeys themselves: their difficulties, obstacles, new discoveries and life in other parts of the world. Special emphasis is placed on Polo’s contribution to bringing East and West closer together.
The centre gives visitors an insight into the history of the town and island of Korčula from the 13th to the 16th century. The story is built on the fact that Marko Polo, with his galley, took part on the side of Venice in the naval battle between the Venetian and Genoese fleets, fought in the Korčula archipelago on 7 September 1298.
By decision of 12 December 2023, the city council of Korčula entrusted the management of the centre to the Gradski muzej Korčula, making it an organisational unit of the museum. The building houses, among other things, a souvenir shop, a library in the basement and a garden.
