About the museum
The Arheološki muzej Osijek (Archaeological Museum Osijek) was founded in 2005 by a decree of the Government of the Republic of Croatia and operated as an independent institution until 2012. In that year it was merged into the Muzej Slavonije (Museum of Slavonia); by decree of 1 December 2017 it was re-established as a separate institution. At that time it took over the entire archaeological department of the Muzej Slavonije, with its staff, material and documentation, 49 archaeological collections in total.
The museum is located in the Osijek Tvrđa, at Trg Svetog Trojstva 2. The Glavna straža (Main Guardhouse) building houses the permanent displays and visitor areas, while the neighbouring Kuća Brožan holds the offices, conservation and restoration workshops and part of the storerooms. The buildings are linked by an atrium under a glass dome; in addition to an exhibition area of about 980 square metres, the museum has a multimedia lecture hall and other event space.
The collections cover finds from the Stone Age to the modern period: Eneolithic and Bronze Age finds, finds from Batina, Roman objects from the Danube limes, frescoes and mosaics, jewellery, weapons and military equipment from the Migration Period and the Middle Ages, as well as an Egyptian collection and a collection of Greek vases. The permanent display presents prehistory and the Migration Period with the Middle Ages, while the display on antiquity is in preparation.
