About the museum
The Muzej Slavonije (Museum of Slavonia) was founded by decision of the City Council of the Free and Royal City of Osijek on 17 February 1877, following a donation from the Osijek merchant Franjo Sedlaković. It is one of the ten oldest museums in Croatia. It moved repeatedly until 1933, and received its first permanent display in rooms on Mažuranićev vijenac. Since 1946 it has been permanently housed in the Magistrat building in the Tvrđa, where it still is today. It has carried its present name since 1947, and in 1994 the Republic of Croatia took over the founding rights, making it a national institution.
The first collection was archaeological, historical and numismatic; artistic, ethnographic, natural history, technical and library material was added later. Over time the collections separated into independent institutions: in 1954 the Galerija slika (Picture Gallery), today the Muzej likovnih umjetnosti (Museum of Fine Arts), and in 2017 the archaeological material passed to the Arheološki muzej Osijek.
The museum holds more than 300,000 objects in 122 collections, among them historical, art, ethnographic, numismatic and natural history collections, and a library. It received its last permanent display in 1977; during the Homeland War the building was severely damaged and the display was evacuated. Today visitors see temporary exhibitions prepared from the museum’s holdings, and a move is being prepared to the Donja oružarna (Lower Armoury) building in the Tvrđa, where a permanent display is also planned.
