About the museum
The Muzej “Staro selo” Kumrovec came into being after 1947, when visitors began to come to Kumrovec to see the birthplace of Josip Broz Tito. The ethnologist Marijana Gušić wrote a study of the village and in 1950 arranged an ethnographic display in the right-hand part of the birthplace. The museum was founded in 1952 as an independent institution, and in 1953 as the Muzej maršala Tita (Museum of Marshal Tito), when construction work and the restoration of the houses began, along with the collection of objects to furnish them.
In 1969 the village was entered in the Register of Cultural Monuments of the first category, and in 1973 it was declared a memorial natural monument and a protected area under the name Spomen-park “Kumrovec”. Although some conservation principles were compromised in the first years of construction because of haste, a representative open-air museum that preserves the authentic setting of a Zagorje village took shape.
Today the museum is part of the Muzej Hrvatskog zagorja (Museum of Croatian Zagorje). It comprises the birthplace of Josip Broz Tito and some forty preserved and restored traditional residential and farm buildings, which house exhibitions on the crafts and customs of Croatian Zagorje from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Craftsmen, among them blacksmiths, potters and weavers, demonstrate their skills to visitors, and the museum also organises exhibitions, events and educational workshops.
