About the museum
The Franciscans returned to Vukovar in 1687, after the area had been liberated from Ottoman rule, and collections of cultural-historical and art material were built up over more than three centuries. They began building the monastery and the church of St Philip and St James, the oldest and most recognisable ensemble of Baroque Vukovar, after permission was granted in 1723. During the Homeland War the complex was severely damaged and the Franciscans were expelled.
In the restored complex, alongside the friars’ residential section and the cloister, a museum space on two floors has been opened. The project to integrate the Franciscan cultural and historical heritage into Vukovar’s tourist offer, agreed in 2017 with support from European funds and the Fund for the Reconstruction and Development of the City of Vukovar, was carried out in cooperation with the Gradski muzej Vukovar (City Museum of Vukovar), the city, the tourist board and the county. The museum was solemnly opened on 3 May 2019.
The museum houses a treasury with valuable artistic treasures, a gallery of old master paintings and a library of rare books. Visitors can also see the church, the crypt, the bell tower and the cloister, and next to the complex is the Pastoralni centar sv. Bono, with a walkway overlooking the Danube.
