About the museum

The Muzej vučedolske kulture (Vučedol Culture Museum) was founded by decree of the Government of the Republic of Croatia on 21 February 2013 as a national museum, and opened to the public on 30 June 2015. It is located at the Vučedol archaeological site, four kilometres downstream from Vukovar, at the foot of the Vinograd Streim plateau. The site is a multi-layered settlement that was inhabited from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages, and was most lively during the Eneolithic, in the 4th and 3rd millennia BC. The Vučedol culture, named after this site, spread in the 3rd millennium BC over the territory of today’s twelve to thirteen European countries.

Major excavations were led in 1938 by the German archaeologist Robert Rudolf Schmidt, who discovered the “Megaron ljevača bakra” (Megaron of the Copper Casters) and the famous Vučedol Dove, also known as the Jarebica (Partridge). Systematic excavations have been carried out since 1984, and less than 10% of the site has been excavated. The concept for the display was prepared by Prof. Dr. Aleksandar Durman. The museum buildings were designed by Radionica arhitekture under Goran Rako, and the display is part of the project Ilok – Vukovar – Vučedol.

The permanent display, on more than 1,200 square metres in 19 rooms, presents the geological position of Vučedol, the earliest Indo-Europeans, animal husbandry, agriculture, settlement and the house, clothing, crafts, metallurgy, ceramics, the calendar, graves and religion. In 2022 the museum and the site received the European Heritage Label.
