Spomen dom Ovčara

About the museum

Five kilometres south-east of Vukovar lies the Ovčara farm, which in recent Croatian history is remembered as the site of the greatest crime of the Homeland War. The hangar, which in peacetime served as a store for agricultural machinery, was turned into a camp for the non-Serb population of the town and its surroundings from September 1991.

On 20 November 1991, more than 260 Croatian defenders and civilians were brought to the hangar from the Vukovar hospital. On arrival, their valuables and personal belongings were taken from them, and they were then beaten and tortured. In the evening and night hours they were taken to a nearby field, where a pit had been dug; 200 of them were executed and buried there without any marking.

Today the Spomen dom Ovčara stands on the site of the hangar and is run by the Memorijalni centar Domovinskog rata Vukovar (Homeland War Memorial Centre Vukovar). A memorial marks the site of the mass grave nearby. Admission to the Spomen dom is free.
