About the museum

The Spomen dom hrvatskih branitelja (Memorial House of Croatian Defenders) was built in the Borovo settlement, next to the local community building which in 1991 housed the command of that part of the city. The building is shaped like a tightly clenched fist, symbolising the strength with which Vukovar defended itself against aggression. It was designed by the Zagreb sculptor Miljenko Romić.

At the centre of the house is a pit with the dome of a destroyed former JNA tank, and the names of the fallen members of the 204th Vukovar Brigade are inscribed around it. On twelve video screens in the walls, wartime photographs and footage of the early events, as well as authentic war reports, are shown.

In front of the Spomen dom stands a tank as a sign of the force that the brave defenders broke, and a bust of Blago Zadro, hero of the city of Vukovar, who led the defenders in this part of the city. The house is part of the memorial sites run by the Memorijalni centar Domovinskog rata Vukovar (Homeland War Memorial Centre Vukovar).
