About the museum
The Gradski muzej Vukovar (Vukovar Town Museum) was founded in December 1946 by decision of the People’s Committee in Vukovar, and first presented itself to the public in 1948 in the building of the old post office in the Baroque centre of the town. Antun Bauer played a major role in the founding; he donated furniture, weapons, paintings, graphic art, sculptures and Roman coins to the museum, and this material became the core of the collections.
The central institution moved in the mid-1960s to the Baroque Eltz Castle (dvorac Eltz). In the Homeland War in 1991 the castle was badly damaged, and the museum operated in exile; the devastated castle was returned to on 27 May 1998. The complete renovation was carried out as part of the project for the renewal and revitalisation of cultural heritage Ilok – Vukovar – Vučedol: the first part of the permanent display on the ground floor opened in 2013, and the entire permanent display on 23 January 2014.
The display extends over 17 rooms on the first floor, and on the second floor and in the attics, covering more than 3,500 m², and encompasses eight thousand years of Vukovar’s past. It is accompanied by a multimedia presentation with 40 monitors and 25 touch screens, and the texts are in Croatian and English. The Zbirka Bauer (Bauer Collection) is presented in a special way.
