About the museum
During the siege of Vukovar in 1991 the hospital was under constant enemy fire, although a large red cross was displayed on its roof. From 25 August 1991, when the town was systematically attacked by artillery and aircraft, the hospital was hit by more than 15 aerial bombs. Patients and staff were moved to the basement, the underground corridors and an atomic shelter, where doctors worked in difficult conditions and without sufficient equipment.
On 20 November 1991, while international observers were held up in the city centre, 267 people were taken from the hospital’s basement. Most of them were killed at Ovčara or elsewhere, and many are still being sought today.
The museum display is located in an authentic place, in the space of the former shelter. A multimedia presentation and a faithful reconstruction of the basement evoke the autumn of 1991 and the courage of the medical staff and patients. The display is run by the Nacionalna memorijalna bolnica “Dr. Juraj Njavro” Vukovar.
