About the museum
The Galerija Ružić i suvremenici was ceremonially opened on 15 June 2004 in the renovated part of the Baroque Brod Fortress, in the so-called Zapadni kavalir (Western Cavalier). It is based on the donation of the sculptor and painter Branko Ružić (Slavonski Brod 1919 – Zagreb 1997), who designated it for a permanent display in his native town by contract of 28 October 1993.
Ružić donated drawings, paintings, sculptures in various materials, prints and tapestries from all periods of his work. Alongside them he assembled a special collection of works by his colleagues: some sixty artists, among them Dušan Džamonja, Šime Vulas, Vladimir Gašparić, Josip Diminić, Slavomir Drinković, Vjenceslav Richter and Ratko Petrić, donated their works, so that the artistic context of Croatian art in the last decades of the 20th century can be partly reconstructed.
The author of the expert concept and the artistic display is Mladen Pejaković. The gallery is managed by the Galerija umjetnina grada Slavonskog Broda (Gallery of Fine Arts of the City of Slavonski Brod), which also manages the nearby Kuća tambure (Tambura House).
