About the museum
The Muzej Brodskog Posavlja is a general local heritage museum founded by Brod-Posavina County. The first thematic display on the past of the town of Brod opened to the public on 1 May 1949, and in 1953 the institution changed its name to Muzej Brodskog Posavlja. The display of 1954 was considered one of the most modern local heritage displays in Yugoslavia at the time.
In the 1964 earthquake, 2,170 houses in Brod were destroyed, and the former Magistrat building, where the museum was housed, was also damaged. After reconstruction, a new display in nine rooms opened in 1969; that same year ICOM included the museum among the fifteen best local archaeological and historical museums in the world. Over the decades the museum changed buildings, but it always stayed in the old town centre, on Starčevićeva ulica.
Today the museum keeps collections in its natural history, archaeology, numismatics, ethnography, cultural history and gallery departments, as well as in the department of contemporary history. It also has a taxidermy workshop and a library with holdings from the 18th century to the present. Thematic and touring exhibitions are held regularly in the exhibition halls.
