About the museum

This neoclassical two-storey house on the main square of Slavonski Brod, the popular Korzo, was built in the 1880s as the Brlić family home: the foundation stone was laid in 1883 and the house was completed in 1884. The design was by the architect Mathias Železny and the construction by Adolf Godt. People who contributed to the public, cultural and political life of Brod and Croatia lived and worked here, the best known among them the children’s writer Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić.

Ivana married the lawyer Vatroslav Brlić in Brod in 1892. As the couple had seven children, the house was extended in 1894. Between the two world wars the house was very well preserved, and its interior was furnished as it had been in the writer’s time, mainly thanks to her youngest daughter Neda Brlić. During the Homeland War the library and archive material was moved away, and after the war the house was closed. It was declared a cultural monument in 2003.

After a thorough renovation, the Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić Interpretation Centre opened on 7 July 2022; the City of Slavonski Brod entrusted its management to the Galerija umjetnina (Gallery of Art). On the ground floor are the information desk, a souvenir shop and a reading room; on the first floor is the authentic Brlić apartment with two salons, a library, a bedroom and a children’s room; and in the attic is a space for literary evenings and cultural presentations.
