About the museum
Slavonski Brod is the town of the “Brodsko kolo”, the oldest folklore event in Slavonia, and here the tambura has received a special honour: in the Brod Fortress the interpretation centre “Kuća tambure – slavonska notna bajka” has been set up, managed by the Galerija umjetnina grada Slavonskog Broda (Gallery of Art of the City of Slavonski Brod). According to the gallery’s annual report it opened in 2024. Earlier, in 2013, the Muzej tambure had opened in the casemates of the fortress.
The permanent exhibition gives an overview of the key aspects of tamburitza heritage: the historical development of the instrument, old and modern methods of building the tambura, the activity of tamburitza orchestras and ensembles, the teaching of the tambura in Croatian schools and its role in the traditional culture of Slavonia. The tambura is presented not only as a traditional instrument but also as an equal classical instrument that has entered contemporary music.
Alongside the exhibition, the house contains a master workshop where visitors can watch tambure being made, a concert hall, an ambient hall and a contemporary sound studio. The centre organises exhibitions, concerts, workshops and other educational programmes.
