About the museum
The first attempts to found a museum in Nova Gradiška go back to the period before the Second World War, when Count Aleksandar Kulmer offered part of the family collection from the castle in Cernik. A collection of old weapons, donated to the future museum by Slava Špišić in 1951, was first exhibited in 1952, and the Zavičajni muzej (local history museum) was founded in 1971. In 1977 it received a two-storey building on the central town square, which today is part of a protected historic ensemble.
The Gradski muzej Nova Gradiška has been an independent public institution since 1 January 2000; its founder is the City of Nova Gradiška. The first phase of the building renovation was completed at the end of 2016, and the permanent display in the attic of the building is still being prepared.
The museum works in five departments – archaeology, ethnology, cultural history, gallery and education – and its area of activity extends from Nova Kapela to Okučani. Its collections include palaeontological finds, a numismatic and an ethnographic collection, and works by Croatian artists of the 20th century, including medals and plaques by Ivo Kerdić.
