About the museum
Gradski muzej Požega was founded on 6 December 1924, thanks to Julije Kempf, a historian, author of the first monograph on Požega and Požega County, educator and mayor. The first permanent display of the “Gradski kulturno-historijski muzej” (City Cultural-Historical Museum) opened on 19 October 1930 in the county building.
The decisive moment came with the move in 1953 to the Krauss house on the main square. The museum then gradually took over space after space, including the neighbouring Spitzer house and a house in Ulica Matice hrvatske, which only became fully part of the museum in 2022. Until then exhibitions were shown in temporary displays, the last of which was in a former shop space in the Spitzer house.
A new chapter began on 1 June 2024, when the renovated museum building and the new permanent display “Od mora do gora” were solemnly opened. The display takes visitors from the oldest traces of life, through Jesuit Požega and the first grammar school in Slavonia, the townhouse of the Kraljević family and the life of Julije Kempf, to glass-making, 20th-century weapons, a traditional village house and an art gallery, and it ends with the custom of Grgurevo.
