About the museum
The Gradski muzej Vinkovci (Vinkovci Town Museum) was founded by an act of the local authorities on 2 November 1946, and was confirmed by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of Croatia. The core of the holdings was the collection of the collector Mate Medvedović, which the town council had purchased as early as 1942 and which, after the war, was gathered and saved by the director of the grammar school, Marko Samarđija. The museum first opened to the public on 11 July 1948, and in 1950 it moved to the building on today’s Trg bana Josipa Šokčevića (Ban Josip Šokčević Square), which had originally been built in 1782 as the home of the Glavna straža.
The art department separated in 1966 as an independent gallery, which since 2004 has borne the name of Slavko Kopač and operates on Duga ulica (Duga Street) as part of the museum; the renovated gallery building opened in June 2026. The museum departments include archaeological, ethnological, historical, numismatic and gallery departments.
A new permanent archaeological display in 12 halls covering 640 m² has been created in stages since 2009: the prehistoric periods are shown in six halls, the Roman in three, and the early Middle Ages in three halls, as a picture of 8,000 years of uninterrupted life on the Vinkovci soil. The ethnological display in the attic, covering around 800 m², presents rural and partly urban life in the 19th and 20th centuries.
