About the museum
In Žabnik on the River Mura the large wheel of a floating mill from the early 20th century still turns: a unique object of rural building heritage. Milling was one of the blessings that the River Mura brought to its inhabitants.
Next to the mill is the visitor centre with the multimedia ethnographic collection “Jen den v živleju mlinara Franca Žalara” (“One Day in the Life of the Miller Franc Žalar”). Through a 3D “miller’s eyes” and numerous interactive exhibits, visitors experience what the last Mura miller, Franc Žalar, dreamed of, whom he met and what he did on one day of his life. Part of the collection is a floor projection that creates the feeling of walking through the shallows of the river.
In the surroundings are the ethnographic collection of the Trstenjak family, two river ferries, the Skelarska kuća (ferryman’s house) with a display on ferrying, a fishing trail, a pedestrian and cycling educational walk, a labyrinth of love, a stud farm of the Međimurje horse and a bird-watching hide. The collection is part of the network of the Ekomuzej Međimurje (Ecomuseum Međimurje).
