About the museum
The Muzej Đakovštine was founded in December 1951, after almost two years of preparation. It was first housed in an Art Nouveau building on today’s Ulica bana Jelačića, and already in 1952 the first permanent display opened and archaeological, ethnographic, cultural-historical, numismatic and fine art collections were set up. At the end of the 1960s it moved into a two-storey building that Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer had built in 1857, and in 1970 a new permanent display opened.
Because of the Croatian War of Independence (Homeland War), the museum’s holdings were moved to safer parts of the country, and in 1994 the museum had to leave its premises. In May 2002 it moved into the thoroughly renovated former district office building from the late 19th century at Ulica Ante Starčevića 34, where it is still located. A new building with storerooms and a library was completed in the courtyard in 2015.
Today the permanent display occupies the ground floor and half of the first floor: the ethnology display opened in 2005, the cultural-history display in 2006, and the archaeology display in mid-2017. The multipurpose hall on the upper floor is used for exhibitions, workshops, lectures and concerts.
