About the museum
Ivan Meštrović, the best-known and most influential Croatian sculptor of the first half of the 20th century, was born in Vrpolje on 15 August 1883, while his parents were temporarily working in Slavonia. As a child he returned to the Dalmatian Hinterland (Dalmatinska zagora) and, by his own account, never visited Vrpolje again. The idea of a museum dedicated to the artist in his birthplace emerged between the two World Wars.
The history of the gallery is linked to the Kulturno-umjetničko društvo (Cultural and Artistic Society) and the Muzej “Ivan Meštrović”, founded on 3 March 1957 on the initiative of the teacher Josip Gol. In 1959 Meštrović donated the work “Majčina briga” (Mother's Care) for the future gallery. Construction, to a design by the architect Rudolf Varga, began in August 1969 beside the church in which the sculptor was baptised, and the Spomen galerija (Memorial Gallery) opened on 3 June 1972.
The permanent display presents 35 works by Meštrović, sculptures and reliefs in plaster and bronze created between 1904 and 1946. Some works are on loan from the Atelijer Meštrović and the Gliptoteka of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (HAZU). The collection of Ivan Meštrović's works and the Likovna zbirka (Art Collection) are protected as cultural property.
