About the museum
The decision to establish the Memorial Museum of Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer was taken in 1986 and signed by the Bishop of Đakovo and Srijem, Ćiril Kos. The diocese handed over the canonry next to the cathedral, and the City of Đakovo, with help from the Republic of Croatia, renovated the building. The museum opened on 4 May 1991 but operated only until 20 July of the same year: because of the threat of war, all its material was moved to Maribor.
Despite the war, art exhibitions by Croatian painters were held in the building from April 1992; there were forty-five of them by 1997. In 1997, with the help of the diocese, the Ministry of Culture and the City of Đakovo, a second permanent display was installed. Experts from the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (HAZU), the Croatian History Museum, the Regional Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments in Osijek and the diocese worked on it.
The display covers about 177 m² in six rooms and shows everything that speaks of Bishop Strossmayer: original documents, photocopies, books, paintings and objects, including restored cartoons by Johann Friedrich Overbeck, sketches for the frescoes in the cathedral. It begins with the bishop's baptismal certificate and ends with his portrait on his deathbed.
